LirIC Interconnector Launches Statutory Pre-Application Community Consultation

8th June 2026

The LirIC Interconnector Project has formally launched the statutory pre-application community consultation for the project and is inviting local communities and consultees to come find out more information about the project at the upcoming consultation events. This will be a space to learn, discuss and feedback on any areas of the development that specifically interest you.

The 142km LirIC Interconnector is a proposed new HVDC subsea electricity link between the Belfast region in Northern Ireland (Kilroot) and the Ayrshire region in Scotland (Hunterston). The project will provide up to 700 MW of additional capacity between the Irish Integrated Single Electricity Market (I-SEM) and the GB wholesale electricity market, enabling security of supply, renewables integration, cheaper electricity and economic benefits to the people and businesses of Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

Our team believe that the communities close to our project and the local knowledge they possess can help us build the LirIC Interconnector in the most socially and environmentally sensitive way. This first phase of consultation runs from 15th June until 24th July and is seeking feedback on our onshore and offshore proposals; any lessons learned from previous local projects and how we can deliver an enduring benefit to local communities. The second phase of public consultation, which will be held in autumn 2026, will set out how your comments have been addressed.

Chris Jenner, LirIC Head of Land and Consents said:

“We’re looking forward to these events so that we can get a better understanding of how to shape our proposals. Incorporating feedback from local communities at this early stage is extremely valuable in order that we can ensure our proposals can be refined to minimise any environmental concerns.”

For those unable to get to an in-person event, a virtual exhibition will also be accessible here from 15th June, where consultees can view information from the consultation events, find out more about our proposals and submit comments and feedback.

There are several ways you can provide feedback to us including:

• Completing a questionnaire
• Speaking to the team
• Sending us an email (consultation.liric@tinv.com)
• Leaving a message on our Freephone number (0800 033 7119)
• Write to – Freepost LIRIC (no stamp required)

This stage of the statutory pre-application consultation will run until 24th July 2026.
