About the Ballylumford 110kV GIS Project

The Ballylumford 110kV GIS Project is for new 110kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) to be installed inside a building called a substation. This will be located adjacent to the existing Ballylumford 110kV Substation. The project is a critical transmission node in the Northern Ireland Electricity Networks. It enables access for conventional generation and the Moyle Interconnector to the Northern Ireland Transmission Grid enabling security of supply, continued reliability, and efficiency of the power system to the people and businesses of Northern Ireland and Great Britain

Project Need

Current Equipment

Current equipment is 40 years old, whilst in good condition it is increasingly likely to be subject to short circuit failures.

Replacement of Equipment

Limited availability of spare parts and technical support dictated the need for the replacement of the equipment

New Substation vs Upgrading

The rebuilding of equipment in-situ or constructing a new air insulated substation were discounted due to technical limitations associated with outages, programme requirements and land availability

Public Engagement

Our team believe that communities close to our project and the local knowledge they bring can help us build the Ballylumford 110kV GIS in the most socially and environmentally sensitive way.

The first phase is seeking feedback on our proposals; any lessons learned from previous projects locally and how we can deliver an enduring benefit to local communities.

We plan to submit the planning application to Mid & East Antrim Area Borough Council in Q3 2026.

Public Engagement Event

It is important to note that any comment made during the consultation process does not affect your statutory rights to make further comments upon a formal planning application and/or marine consent once submitted.
