As part of our commitment to tackling the climate emergency, we need to look at our relationship with the things we throw away.
One of the biggest impacts on the climate comes from the way we handle the waste we produce. We need to consider everything from reducing the amount of rubbish that we create, to finding ways to reuse and recycle materials so that we use less energy refining raw materials, and reduce the amount of carbon produced in the disposal process.
What is this engagement about?
We are engaging with our communities on our vision for waste and our draft strategy, both available to view on the table in the middle of the virtual street.
However, if we are going to achieve our vision for a zero waste Kirklees, we are going to need your help.
We’ve created a range of materials to encourage discussion and help you think about what you might be able to do and what you think will be more difficult.
Check out the ‘journey of a yoghurt pot’, our ‘food waste story’ and ‘what’s in your recycling bin’.
We know that there will always be some things that we need to throw away, so to make recycling easier for everyone we are planning to introduce a new recycling collection service. This will include:
• separate containers for glass and food waste
• opportunity to recycle more plastics in your recycling bin
Because different types of properties might need slightly different containers, we’ve created some images of different variations for you to consider.
You’ll find information on the following types of homes:
• terraced properties
• flats & apartments
• difficult to access homes
• Semi and detached homes
It is important that we understand your thoughts on these proposed changes so please visit the property that most looks like yours to see how the collections might look.
How do I share my views?
We know that all this exciting news might have you itching to ask questions so our advisors are on hand during the day to chat to through the virtual chat.
We are also holding some webinars where we will talk you through the changes and take questions.
